Why are we conducting this Breast Cancer Initiative?
In an effort to determine how best to provide support and/or services for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) with regards to breast cancer, Community Navigators Inc. is collecting data to determine where there is a need.
Are women with I/DD getting yearly mammograms?
Are they doing self-exams?
Do they know what breast cancer is?
Why does Community Navigators care so much about the I/DD population and breast cancer?
Larissa Gionfriddo, founder and CEO of Community Navigators Inc., is currently battling Stage 4 breast cancer. As a life-long advocate for people with I/DD, Larissa realized that the community for which she has long advocated is sadly lacking the resources to build awareness and prevention of breast cancer.
Larissa is a strong believer in the phrase “Nothing about us without us.” As she said, “I’ve worked my whole life toward building an inclusive community. And now I see that breast cancer is also inclusive.”
